Former Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i implicated in a case involving the seizure of sugar in 2018 that was later revealed to have been unjustly condemned for political reasons.
The sugar which was imported from Egypt was initially alleged to be contaminated with mercury, a claim that was later disproven.
Court testimonies from employees at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) suggest that the ban was politically motivated and designed to create a market for sugar cartels.
Officials allege that political pressure led to the seizure of safe goods, disrupting the market and benefiting connected cartels.
A verdict is expected on February 28, 2025.
